Well folks, this is my final guitar picture post before we leave for the Montreal show. This guitar is fairly plain but the tone has stolen my heart. I am a minimalist and appreciate simple elegant designs in which the beauty of the wood can take center stage instead of a lot of bling.

Specs for this OM include back and sides of Cuban Mahogany which is a first build for me. This wood is very difficult to acquire since it is no longer exported from Cuba. I have heard from several luthiers that this is the "holy grail of the mahoganies". I must say that the tone is quite different from what I was expecting. To my ear, the tone reminds me more of the rosewood family than it does mahogany. It still has a nice strong bite in the midrange but it also has powerful RW bass and crisp fat trebles too. It was more brittle than I was expecting and I broke the first set of sides that I bent.

The top is a nice colorful stripe-y piece of Western Red Cedar with lots of beautiful medullar rays or cross grain silking. Top and back Purflings are maple and ebony lines. Curly African Sapele back strip, body and FB bindings bordered with a single black ebony line, Macassar Ebony headstock, one piece Wild Black Cherry neck, 25.4" scale length, Macassar Ebony 1-3/4" FB & 2-1/4" bridge. Gold Gotoh sealed tuners. Our family crest [Mc] Knight Head logo adorns the plain fret board at the 12th fret and another emblem of our Scottish ancestry; a "Luckenbooth Brooch" shaped sound port offers immediate feedback to the player.

Thanks for looking and we hope to see some of you in Montreal in a few days...

Tim, that guitar looks anything but plain to me. It's beautiful! Good luck in Montreal (bummer I won't have a chance to get to see the show while I am there on business this week).

Tim, that guitar is elegant and well thought out, beautiful arrangements or should i say clever design ? The sound port reveals the true artist in you! Can't wait to be where you are now!

Tim, that's a beautifully executed guitar...design, appointments, everything. You've really nailed this one, and the last one you showed us as well. I have no doubt you're going to do well this week at the show.
Those Sapele bidings are awesome! That port is perhaps the nicest I've seen yet. Excellent!
I'm also really liking your cherry necks. I think it's a great idea. It's a very stable wood, and beautiful. Cherry works easier than maple too. We should all be considering cherry as an alternative neck wood given the current state of mahogany availability.
Nice work indeed!

Tim,

Gorgeous

I knew you'd love the Cuban. A mahogany with aspirations to be a Rosewood is how I describe it. I'll have to try it with WRC - it works beautifully with Euro Spruce and I have one in the works with Shane's Lutz as a top which should sound great too.

Have fun in Montreal.

Lovely instument Tim, but then yours always are!

Dave I have one ready to start with Cuban and Redwood, should be the one stage on from Honduran/WRC. I've made one before with WRC and it is my current DADGad guitar, a lovely sound.

Wonderful job Tim. I really like how you are 'branding' your guitar is so many ways, makes it distinctly "McKnight". Best of luck in Montreal!

Tim,
Love the rosette, love the woods, love the finish, love the inlay, love the sound port.....let's see...I could keep going with no trouble.

That is simply a beauty and I'm sure it's been a hit with everyone who's seen it so far and will be with anyone who will see it in the future.

Nice continuity in every aspect of the guitar and I'm sure she sounds as great as she looks. That guitar is what this whole craft is about!

Thanks for sharing it with us!
